What motivated you to apply for the SIA apprenticeship?

I was about half way through my 5th year at high school when I started looking for an apprenticeship as I was not enjoying school. As I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, my dad suggested the apprenticeship at SIA. After looking into the job and reading a bit about the apprenticeship, it seemed like the right option, and I went for it. I knew I didn’t want to be stuck in the one place and this job is certainly not that. I also enjoy being hands on and figuring out how things work so this job suited me quite well.

What skills have you learned so far within your apprenticeship?

So far, I have learned the in’s and out’s of the compressors and the generators. I’ve learned how to service both the compressors and generators and what to look out for when faults occur. I’ve also been learning about the electrical side of the job while I’ve been at college. I’ve picked up a few handy tips off the other engineers which will benefit me moving forward.

What do you enjoy the most about your apprenticeship?

I enjoy being able to see different parts of the country that I might have not gone to on my own accord. I’ve enjoyed finding out how important compressed air is and the different industries that use compressed air. Also being able to meet new people through work and the college has also been great.

What advice would you give someone who is applying for an apprenticeship?

I’d recommend anyone going for an apprenticeship to stick in and work hard everyday and take in as much information as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help as there is no such thing as a silly question.
