How Do Nano Nitrogen Generators Work?

A nitrogen generator produces nitrogen gas on-site by separating it from the surrounding air. Since air is roughly 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, the generator’s job is to remove the oxygen (and other trace gases) to leave a high-purity nitrogen stream.

Two main technologies are used: Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and membrane separation.

  • PSA systems push clean, dry compressed air through columns filled with a Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) media. The CMS traps oxygen molecules while allowing nitrogen to pass through. The system alternates between columns: one producing nitrogen while the other regenerates this ensures a continuous supply. PSA systems can produce N2 gas up to a purity of 99.999%.
  • Membrane systems use hollow fibres that allow oxygen, water vapour, and other gases to permeate out faster than nitrogen, leaving a concentrated nitrogen flow. Membrane systems can produce N2 gas up to a purity of 99.7%.
