While much of Scotland basked in the summer heatwave over the weekend of 12th–13th July 2025, the team at SIA Compressors & Generators was hard at work on a time-critical installation project in Edinburgh. Our destination? The state-of-the-art facility of the Gold Award winners at the 2025 FIA (Flexographic Industry Association) UK Print Awards.
With just two days to complete a full compressed air system upgrade, precision and teamwork were key to delivering outstanding results, despite the rising temperatures.
Our team arrived onsite early on Saturday 12th July. The compressed air supply had to be safely shut down and depressurised before work could begin.
The original compressed air setup was inefficient, with interconnecting pipework contributing to significant pressure drops and an undersized air receiver limiting system performance.
· Full mechanical and electrical disconnection of existing equipment
· Removal of:
o 3 × 55kW air compressors
o 2 × compressed air dryers
o 1 × 1250l vertical air receiver
With the old system stripped out and the workspace cleared, we were ready to install a more modern, energy-efficient compressed air solution.
The first major installation was the new 3000l galvanised air receiver standing at nearly 3 metres tall and weighing almost 600kg. Given the confined space and obstructions such as gas pipework and building supports, positioning this component required careful coordination.
Once this critical task was completed, the focus shifted to the installation of the new air compressors.
By Saturday evening, a 90kW BOGE energy-efficient Variable Speed Drive (VSD) air compressor complete with an integrated dryer was electrically connected and operational. This ensured production could resume for the Sunday night shift, giving the client vital peace of mind.
With the first compressor operational, the team returned early on Sunday to complete the full system installation.
· Electrical supply installed for the second compressor by 8am
· Mechanical connections finalised
· Modified pipework connected to the new air receiver
· Installation of a valved bypass system to allow for receiver insurance inspections without interrupting production
Despite limited space and soaring temperatures, our mechanical and the electrical engineers worked seamlessly to ensure everything was completed on schedule.
Gone are the tangled, inefficient pipework routes. The new system delivers clean, direct air to the production area with improved efficiency and reliability.
· Energy Efficient VSD Compressors
· Operating between 64%–78% of full load output
· Lower pressure settings improve energy savings and efficiencies
· Built-in refrigerant-type air dryers
· Increased storage capacity for better energy savings
· 100% duty/standby configuration for system resilience
· Automated 24-hour duty alternation between compressors
· 24/7 real-time monitoring with advanced remote diagnostics
· Genuine extended warranty programme
· 24/7/365 emergency call-out support
With air leaks already identified and scheduled for repair, even greater efficiency gains are on the horizon.
By Sunday evening, both compressors were fully installed, commissioned, and running ahead of the night shift, right on schedule.
A huge thank you to Ricky, Gary, and Chris from the SIA team, and to the client’s own engineering team, whose professionalism and pride in their work made this project a true collaboration.
